Photography has been a significant part of my professional life for the past decade, shaping not just my career but also the approach we take at Creative Compass UK. Whether capturing the energy of a live event or the quiet moments of a portrait, the experience I've gained over the years has become a cornerstone of our work.
My photography career kicked off with photographing my friend's band when I was just fourteen. This first taste of professional experience at such a young age ignited the spark that was my love for photography, and I'll never forget that first gig at Drummonds Cafe in Aberdeen.
Following this was an exciting role as the youth and women's photographer for Aberdeen Football Club. This experience taught me the importance of timing and capturing moments that convey the energy of live sports. It was a fast-paced environment where quick decision-making was key, and it helped to develop the foundation for my approach to photography.
These very different roles made me realise that my "focus" was to try every genre of photography so I could gain as wide a range of experience as possible!
When me and Jamie co-founded Creative Compass UK, we knew that photography would be an important part of what we offer. It's not just about taking pictures - it's about understanding what we want the image to convey and how it can best represent a brand, individual, event, or situation. My decade of experience in photography plays a big part in how we approach each project, ensuring that our visuals are tools that help communicate our clients' messages effectively.
After ten years behind the lens, I've collected insights that go further than just taking a good photo, here's a few:
Understand the Narrative
Every photo should tell a story. Before you start shooting, take the time to understand the subject's background, the emotions you want to convey, and the message the image should communicate. This approach ensures that your photos are not only visually appealing but also meaningful.
Be Adaptable
Flexibility is crucial in client photography. Whether it's changing lighting conditions, a spontaneous moment you didn't anticipate, or a challenging environment, being able to adapt quickly is critical to capturing the best shot. Always have a backup plan and be ready to think on your feet.
Focus on Details
The difference between a good photo and a great one often lies in the details. Pay attention to composition, lighting, and even the most minor elements in the frame. These details can enhance the overall impact of your photo and make it stand out.
Invest in Continuous Learning
Photography, like any other craft, evolves constantly. New technologies, techniques, and trends emerge constantly. Make it a habit to stay informed and continue learning, whether through online courses, workshops, or simply experimenting with your camera.
Build a Connection with Your Subject
Whether you're photographing people or animals, building a connection with your subject can significantly improve the outcome. Take the time to make your subject feel comfortable and understood. This will reflect in the final images, making them more authentic and engaging.
At Creative Compass UK, these lessons guide how we approach every photography project. We aim to capture images and create visuals that align with our client's brands and resonate with their audiences. Whether you're looking for corporate photography, event coverage, or personal portraits, we bring a decade of experience and lessons learnt to every project!
